Andrews Family papers, 1823-1950.

The Andrews Family Papers include documents of several generations of this Southern family, who lived in Georgia and Chattanooga, TN. This collection covers the lives of Judge Garnett Andrews (1798-1873), his son Col. Garnett Andrews (1837-1903), and his son Garnett Andrews, Sr. (1870-1946). There are also documents detailing Andrews family genealogy, as well as other allied families such as Ball, Beirne, Bowen and Lenoir. There are photographs of family members, correspondence, documents, publications and manuscripts. Of particular interest is the journal of Eliza Frances Andrews (1840-1939), daughter of Judge Andrews. Eliza Andrews wrote several books, articles and essays (under her own name and using pseudonyms Fanny Andrews and Elzey Hay), including the popular War Time Journal of a Georgia Girl, 1864-1865 (D. Appleton & Co., 1908), A Family Secret (as Elzy Hay) (Lippincott, 1876) and several botany text books. Her journal, which covers 1870-1872, was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2002, with the title Journal of a Georgia Woman, 1870-1872, edited by UTC Professor Kittrell Rushing.

Garnett Andrews (1798-1873) was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, on October 30, 1798, and died in Washington, Georgia, on August 14, 1873. He married Annulet Ball on April 10, 1828, and they had eight children. Andrews was educated at Washington Academy and admitted to the bar in the early 1820s. He practiced law for fifty years and served two terms as a state representative (1836-1855 and 1868-1873). He also served as judge of the northern circuit of Georgia. Garnett Andrews (1837-1903) of Washington, Ga., Yazoo, Miss., and Chattanooga, Tenn., was a Confederate army officer, and served as Judge-Advocate at the Confederate court-martial trial of Lafayette McLaws (1821-1897) and Jerome Bonaparte Robertson (1815-1890).
